Toggle navigation Swingley Development. Does anyone know of a type study on Buck Bros? Compared to some of your other more sexy tools, such as planes and saws and braces, in which the newest patentable feature is all the rage, the chisel is a more conservative tool that doesn’t lend itself to fashion trends. A chisel is a hunk of steel sometimes steel and iron with a handle and sometimes a ferrule. What matters is the quality of the steel and craftsmanship that goes into transforming it into a chisel.
Planemakers and sawmakers and bracemakers were constantly adding new features and new patents which enabled them to briefly corner the market until the next big advance came along. For planes, saws, etc.

Mostly ignoring the results of generations of tool and technological advancement, a violin maker is interested in an older tradition, and uses tools that were optimized hundreds of years ago. Ours is a craft that has remained largely unchanged for years. So I can make a violin in a well-appointed shop with band saws, lathes, mills, and jointers there has been some technological adaptation , but I can also make a violin on a mountainside, without electricity or plumbing.
On a non-industrial scale, the hand tools are less hassle, produce less harmful dust, and are really fun to travel with through the violin-making learning curve. Other violin makers look for efficiency and cleverness when they see what tools you use to build your instruments, and part of learning how to make a violin is spent understanding how each hand tool will ideally work. My first teacher, Peter Prier, hit the nail on the head with the first rule he taught me: Always use the biggest tool for the job.
Big P was a big, strong guy, and he hated to see violin-making students fussing with tiny tools for shaping and refining the plates of instruments. Get used to the biggest tool whose shape will remove wood the way you want it to, and you save time—and keep yourself fit to boot. Here are a few of the specialized tools I use to build my violins, violas, and cellos.
Speaking of the biggest tool for the job, these are hand tools for roughing out shapes. The rough arching gouge and the scrub plane are the one-two combo for removing lots of wood quickly. They require confidence, strength, and an understanding of how and why a good tool cuts through difficult wood. A heavy gouge with a deep sweep the depth of the curved shape of the steel from side to side will produce long, clean slugs of wood out of heavily figured maple if the maker knows that tools cut best by slicing, and not simply pushing.
A curved samurai sword drawn across an enemy will slice them into two halves, while a broadsword brought down like a club just gets stuck in whatever it cleaves.
I was recently asked by a Hand Tool School member to provide a list of good chisel brands to aid him in buying. That’s actually a pretty tough question to answer seeing as I don’t have more than 5 minutes of fiddle time with more than a couple brands. So I started to think about what I like about my favorite chisels, and for that matter which one is my favorite chisel.

By bernieswanson , December 2, in Hand Tools. I found this in my bench and do not recall its origin. I would like to date it and understand its use. It it just used for carving , like braid or rope detail? Would you insert vertical, thee pry out chips. It is a gouge but looks more like a chisel intended for striking with a mallet. The handle would not be long enough for a turning tool. Also the handle may pull out of a socket easier than that tang chisel would if used to turn.
My guess is it is used for carving. You could quite easily make a replacement handle for it. That one has a metal hoop around the striking edge of the handle and says dates from the s. Far from rare. It’s a common out cannel bench or firmer gouge.

This is what I believe to be my opinion in most cases, but often taken from some other source. Use the information as such. Pine Knot and Bluegrass were house brands of Belknap. Belknap started in Louisville, Kentucky in twenty years before the start of the Civil War;it was started by William Burke Belknap. They had several tiers of tools the first one is the highly recognized name of Bluegrass followed by Pine Knot, Crusader and Cyclone tools.
Strong bevel edge chisels are the most versatile type of chisel. I have been using Buck Bros. firmer chisels and Marples heavy duty chisels.
Traditionally, there was a different chisel for just about every job. A fine bevel edged chisel left compared to one of my heavy duty Marples bevel edge chisels. Traditionally, the firmer chisel would have been a general purpose choice. These are square across which gives them plenty of strength for the light morticing and such. A strong chisel, with beveled edges is a good combination. The registered chisel front , along with the more standard, thinner variant, the firmer chisel, both have parallel edges.
These are super strong, but not nearly as versatile as the heavy-duty bevel edged chisel back. For myself, ensuring that sharpening is swift and routine , is probably more important than the tools themselves. I can optimise my edge for a task, just as you may create a point on a pencil when adding detail, or form a flat for shading. This means that having just a few chisels on the bench, is enough to make an uncompromising tool kit. The changes you make will be to optimise the cutting angle as required, and maybe even the shape of the bevel.
