Sailing across the Bay of Biscay presents unique challenges for even the most adventurous sailing enthusiast. The explanation lies in the unique geographical location of the bay. It is situated in the northeast Atlantic Ocean, south of the Celtic sea. The rough seas and violent storms experienced by sailors at the bay are attributable to its exposure to the Atlantic Ocean.

After more than 70 days, the Vendee Globe is set for an epic finish, with the youngest skipper to win the Clipper Race, Alex Thomson, closing in on the lead as the race enters into the final 24 hours. The move overnight is another chapter in the heroic comeback story which has seen Alex make up nearly nautical miles on the Frenchman since December. If he can re-take the lead, he will become just the second Briton to win a solo, non-stop around the world yacht race.

When you think about it, he is going four times faster than I did 48 years ago. It proved to be an inspired choice. Alex guided his team Ariel to victory, and remains to this day the youngest Clipper Race skipper to achieve this feat.

Having been forced to abandon his first two attempts in and due to boat damage, Thomson finished third in and then second last time out in , when he would have won but for a broken foil which handicapped him for most of the race.

The year-old has high hopes that the next edition will be the one that sees him break his duck and become the first Briton to win the non-stop, solo round-the-world race known as the Everest of sailing.

W ith the monohull world increasingly embracing foils it seems timely to reflect on some of the lessons learnt over the past year and how and beyond look for the impact of DSS and for the other foil solutions in the marketplace.. While dramatic footage of semi-flying or flying yachts gets the headlines it is the background story that is perhaps more significant. In 15 years of developing, engineering and supplying DSS foils and installing them on various yachts we have never had a failure beyond the cracking of one foil, quickly identified as a failure by the builder to build the hull exit bearing surface as drawn.

It is therefore quite thought-provoking to see the failure level in some other avenues of foil development. However, this is a different situation where lightweight constructions are consciously being explored and tested to the ultimate limit. Still, it does confirm that this is a complex area of development when the best engineers and designers in yacht racing still have to place more than a little reliance upon good old trial and error. Safety and reliability have always been the watchwords in our development of foils at DSS.

So we stand at a key point in the development of foils within the industry; it is no longer the preserve of the lunatic fringe, and it is crucial that future development needs to prioritise safety and reliability. The first fully flying keelboat for production, and designed to be very much the everyman design that would allow a new generation, young and less young, to fly in safety and without the need to swim if it all went wrong.

The launch of the Infiniti 46 offshore racer, again Welbourn designed, caused a few raised eyebrows and comments when she first arrived in Europe in May, particularly with respect to the ability of such a boat to sail to its IRC rating. Class wins and podiums in the Rolex Middle Sea Race and then the RORC Transatlantic Race, all with a Corinthian crew, demonstrate that perhaps the rating office might have been closer to the mark than the armchair experts.

What has been more interesting has been the amount learnt in the 10, miles of sailing in that the first Infiniti 46 has now completed. Zero structural failures, zero foil issues, zero issues with foil exits and, interestingly, zero UFO strikes…. We have always built our foils with Dom Pedron of Isotop and to date they have all been engineered by either Gurit or Will Brooks and, so far, they have all performed to expectation.

Josse was one of the pre-race favourites had been lying in third place since November 23rd and the approach to the Cape of Good Hope and had sailed a mature, composed race to date, regulating his speed and managing his risks prudently but still showing periods of great speed on Edmond de Rothschild. But his race was effectively terminated in a few seconds on Monday when he sustained damage to his port foil and support mechanism ploughing to a standstill in the trough of a big wave.

As for De Pavant, he lost the structure which supports the canting keel on his Bastide-Otio after striking an object in the water, some miles north of the Crozet Islands. His boat was suffering a constant ingress of water and the keel was suspended beneath the boat only by a hydraulic ram. Of the seven sailors who have had to withdraw, three have had to retire from three races.

Bertrand de Broc and Vincent Riou have been forced out of three although Riou was only denied a finish in by his heroic rescue of the capsized Jean Le Cam miles from Cape Horn and was given a third place as redress.

The sailor from the five-arrow racing stable was lying in third place at the time and was one of the driving forces of the legendary non-stop, unassisted, round the world race. The announcement of his retirement after a month of racing having covered over 10, nautical miles was quite a blow Indeed, the serious damage to his port foil, that occurred on Monday morning at GMT, left him in a tricky situation where he had to contend with some extreme weather conditions 40 knots of breeze and 8-metre waves to the South of Australia, along the edge of the Antarctic Exclusion Zone.

However, the skipper of Gitana Team knew the timing was tight to reap the benefits of this particularly active front, with the emphasis on trying to avoid getting caught up by the phenomenon, where metre waves were The Indian has stirred.

As the only British crew member on-board, Brian Thompson, today clocked up two major records as the maxi trimaran, Banque Populaire V, crossed the Jules Verne Trophy finish line near Brest, France this evening. Thompson is part of the crew that has just smashed the world speed record for a lap of the planet on- board a yacht and has simultaneously become the first Briton to circumnavigate the globe non-stop for a fourth time.

The Banque Populaire V crew sailed non-stop around the world in an incredible 45 days 42 minutes 13 hours 53 seconds. Having spent over six weeks at sea, the crew were thrilled to see a flotilla of boats and crowds on the dock ready to welcome them home and are looking forward to celebrating their success with friends and family. And that is because of the quality of the boat, of the preparation and most of all to the incredible crew on board.

Commenting on his next goal he said:. And the whole way around I have been thinking about every detail on how to do another solo lap of the planet – faster,. What better place to test that experience, than in the Vendee Globe ? Last year this formidable yacht set two further world speed records; the first for sailing around Britain and Ireland in June and the second when the crew were the fastest the classic Fastnet course in August Although this latest world speed record relates specifically to a yacht, the lap of the planet has actually been completed faster than any other vessel ever, be that under power or sail.

Thompson already has an impressive list of sailing achievements to his name and can now add these accolades to his remarkable collection.
